Robinho

Robson de Souza, or better known as ‘Robinho’, is one of the current football icons worldwide. Since a young age he was labelled as ‘The Next Pele’. He entered on the football stage playing for Santos, where Pele played most of his career, and speculated interest from European giants.

Robinho signed his first professional contract at the age of 18 for Santos. His first season finished off successfully, but could have even finished better. He won the Campeonato Brasileiro in his debut season, and scoring 1 goal in the process. It was the first time Santos had won it since Pele was playing for them. It could of got better for him, however, as he missed out on winning the Copa Libertadores, as Santos were defeated by Boca Juniors. The next season, Santos won the Campeonato Brasileiro, and Robinho contributed 21 goals in 37 appearances. His fantastic form brought interest from Europe, including clubs such as Real Madrid and Barcelona. However, he chose to stay on for another season, but because of personal problems involving his mum, he couldn’t play as well as he did previously, as he only contributed 9 goals in only 12 appearances. After his 3rd season with Santos, Real Madrid bought out his buyout clause, and was on his way to his first big move.

For a fee of €24million, he joined Real Madrid and was given the number 10, previously worn by Portuguese legend Luiz Figo. In his first season, he made 37 appearances and scored an impressive 14 goals. Real Madrid fell short this season however, as Barcelona claimed the Champions League and La Liga double. The next season Robinho was often chose to be on the bench for most parts of the season for being too “flashy”. As Real Madrid were falling short once again, Robinho and team mate David Beckham were then selected and together made a huge difference for the team and won the title on the last game of the season. The next season, Real Madrid were to win their second title in a row, and unlike the season before, Robinho made a good contribution at the start of the season, instead of the end, due to injuries. He managed to score 11 goals and create 8 in that season. Robinho finished in the top 10 of the Ballon d’Or and was nominated for the FIFA World Player of the Year. Robinho fell out love with Real Madrid in his fourth season, mainly because he offered to Manchester United in order to buy Cristiano Ronaldo, but the deal fell through but Robinho then wanted to leave the club. It was rumoured he was leaving for Chelsea, but Manchester City had bided more and moved on transfer deadline day for £32.5million.

Robinho was apparently on £160,000 a week at City, the richest club in the world. Robinho scored on his debut against Chelsea, but City lost the game 3-1. His first season went quite well, as he finished as their top goal scorer with 14 goals, and the 4th top goal scorer in the league.  He also managed to captain his side on a few occasions and considered as City’s most important player. However, his second season didn’t go to well. His form and commitment was questioned before being sent out on loan back to Santos in January for the rest of the season. He finished his loan and returned to City, before being signed by AC Milan where a new chapter of his career will soon be written. He will wear the number 70 shirt and has signed a four year deal.
